Tactic 5 – Public Event on Campus
Our group "A Helping Hand for the Hungry" participated in an event called "March Forth on March Fourth." The main purpose of this event was to give every social movement group on campus the opportunity to raise awareness about their causes. Our group's focus was the issue of hunger and food insecurity. We publicized this issue by putting up signs and marching with them in order for the students on campus as well as the people out in the street walking or driving to read them and become aware of what is happening in our community as well as in the rest of the country. We also had food available on campus in order to attract more people to participate in our event, therefore creating more connections for our causes. We had an open microphone available for any student to speak about any social movement and any issue. We also had the participation of entertainers like "The Raging Grannies" which sang songs about activism. We also raffled prices to those who took the time to walk up to our tables and let us inform them about our group's social movement, which I think contributed to the success of the event. I enjoyed this event because it was a fun way of engaging in activism and letting students and other people know more about certain issues that are going on in our community and in our country in general. I would definitely do an event like this to raise awareness not only about hunger and food insecurity but also to promote the ways in which people can contribute to help stop this serious issue that is affecting so many people in our country every day that are struggling to put food on their tables. Public events are great ways to show activism, especially on school campuses where most students are concerned about social issues.
