Tactic 1-Push Polling
One of the five tactics that our group, "A Helping Hand for the Hungry", engaged in was the push polling survey. We asked the people some questions about our cause and we found that 10% of the people who took the survey do not believe hunger/food insecurity is a serious problem in the United States. About 30% of people who participated in the interview knew that 11% of US households are at risk for hunger and food insecurity. 55% of the survey takers did not know that more than 1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger. We also found that 15% of the interviewees think that hunger/food insecurity is not a serious issue in Fresno. We also asked them if they knew that in recent years (2012) Fresno was ranked, as the fifth hungriest metro in the nation and 74% responded no. We found that 10% of people disagreed with the statement "poverty is the leading cause of hunger/food insecurity." When we asked them if they knew that 50 million Americans struggle to put food on the table 56% answered that they were not aware. 75% of the respondents said that they were not currently receiving or have ever received government aid such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). We found that only 30% of the survey takers were male and 70% were female. We also asked them to give us their zip code but we did not find a pattern in the responses. I also found interesting that 64% of people who took the survey skipped the ethnicity question. Out of those who responded to the ethnicity question, 65% were Hispanic. Based on the data only a few people thought that hunger/food insecurity is not a serious issue in Fresno and the United States. The push poll tactic was an interesting method for finding people's perception on our issue.
