Movement Tactic: Push Polling
Push polling was definitely something new to me, when I heard in the beginning of the semester that we would be doing this I was not looking forward to it but surprisingly I enjoyed it. My group "fighting for paws" and I organized a survey with questions regarding animal facts and some questions to help us determined who were the respondents in such as gender and age group. We were able to access our surveys through Cati shack, which Dr.Kubal provided for us. We were each required to do two hours of push polling. During the first half hour I did not get a hold of anyone, my calling time was at 10am, which I thought was a bad time because many people are at work during that time, or at school. Luckily toward the end of my hour I did get some people to actually answer the phone. Overall, I enjoyed doing this push polling. I was able to get out of my comfort zone, and I was an able to learn new things.
One of our first questions was to see how many people taking the survey were actually pet owners; out of 36 respondents 69% were some kind of pet owners. The second question was if you knew that more than 32% of animal abuse cases in the US occur due to neglect and abandonment, 49% of respondents answered "no, I didn't know but I do care", and the second highest response was " yes, I knew and I do care" with 43%. The following question was to know if our respondents were aware that dog fighting is considered a felony in all 50 states, and 67% answered yes. We also wanted to inform our respondents aside of asking them questions, so we asked questions such as "Did you know that in San Francisco, 1.2 stray or abandoned pets are euthanized for every 1,000 residents and that the rate in Fresno is about 40 times higher at a whopping 47.4, one of the worst in the state", 86% of the respondents answered no. I think by the results of our survey we concluded that many people did care about the situation of animal abuse, but many were not informed about it.
