Black Lives Matter Notes

The Black Lives Matter supporters said this is not just a cause, Black Lives Matter's is "The True Life of Blacks". According to this documentary 4 times more blacks get arrested for drugs than whites do. Another stunning statistic is how young black men are 14 times more likely to die than other races. All these statistics tell a sad but true story of how blacks are singled out by the cops especially in Baltimore and Chicago. Gun violence is so bad in Chicago that a mother of a shooting victim states "For people not to come to Chicago because the children can't even go outside" it is too violent. A total of fifty shootings left eight dead in one weekend in Chicago. The ironic thing about Chicago is that in the early 1900's the blacks fled the racism of the south for a peaceful place called Chicago. It was not so ironic that the racism of blacks followed them where ever they went. Now speaking on Baltimore. Baltimore burned in 1968 with Dr. Martin Luther King and nowadays the social movement is rising again. This all started with the death of Trevon Martin in 2012. A total of 6 cops in Baltimore were prosecuted for the death of Martin. Finally a cop named Michael Woods sounded the alarm about cops being crooked in Baltimore. This was a huge eye opener that showed the truth of racism inside of our countries police force.

The family of Tamir Rice received six million dollars this past week due to the death of their son. While the death may have been two year ago Black Lives Matter activists protested the situation that occurred, until justice was met. A caller reported seeing Tamir with a toy pellet gun but didn't relay the information properly. The caller mentioned while the young man was playing with a gun it was "probably fake". When police officers arrived to the seen they immediately shot to boy and killed him. Moments later, his fourteen years old sister ran to his side and police talked and handcuffed her. Black Lives Matter activists used resource mobilization in order to bring together the community in Cleveland, Ohio to demand justice for Tamir. The family used part of their money in order to educate the youth in the danger of mishandling both real and facsimile firearms.
Before President Obama arrives in Germany approximately 90,000 people began to protest the Transatlantic Trade and Investment: Partnership (TTIP) between the U.S. and European Union. TTIP would undermine safety and environmental regulations. It would do this in order to boost corporate interests. While the tens of thousands gather to protest this deal an individual in the crowd named Ivo Ivancic states "They are creating a second judicial system and working behind their backs". Ivo and the fellow protestors are using resource mobilization and framing theory in order to back up their protests. By gathering tens of thousands of people they are not letting their cause go down without a fight. With framing theory they are framing key points in their issue such as not letting Ivo and his fellow protestors be part of the negotiations and keeping them in the dark about what is happening.

Tabling
Along with the march first we began tabling. We set up our table next to the Fresno Bully Rescue and started to hand out flyers to student who would pass. When we first began around noon the atmosphere was lively and energetic. We would at times get a small crowd of people to stop by and ask questions. Conversations were very easy going and they seemed very perceptive of our cause. Some students even asked if there was an organization they can join – which personally came as the biggest shock. They felt the over population of cats and dogs in the Fresno area needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, we just explained to them we were doing this for a class and expressed the same apprehensions they felt. Overall, it was an interesting process to be on the other side of the table and speak on behalf of a social issue. The process wasn't as scary as I originally thought, once we started speaking it bridge the gap between us and everyone else. A few areas where we could've improved were preparing a little better. We only had a certain amount of flyers to hand out and greatly estimated how much we needed. Pretty soon we turned from handing out information and talking to just talking without anything to leave them with. Another area we could've improved on was maybe having more people in our group or reducing the number of total groups in order to have more people speak on fewer subjects. Whenever we spoke to a person we would do it in pairs, making it easier to play off each other bounce around ideas taking the pressure off. After that the entire day I felt was a success for our group individually but it appeared that everyone was doing just fine as well.

Black Lives Matter

In the movie, "Black Lives Matter" there were many highlights of framing. One example that depicted framing was the recorded videos of the cops who used excessive force and killed innocent African Americans. The recordings were used to negatively portray the cops as killers adding on to the movement Black Lives Matter. Political opportunity was also present especially with the murder case of Trayvon Martin in 2012 that created the Black Lives Matter movement. The unjust ruling of the court system that ruled not guilty to the policemen that killed Trayvon gave the African American community a political opportunity to create the Black Lives Matter movement. An example of resource mobilization can be seen when The Black Lives Matter evolved into a national issue with the help of social media. The spread of its message influenced the rise of thousands of people to take a stand with the movement and spread its message.

Special Report: Voices from Puerto Rico's Students Leading an Anti-Austerity Movement

The article discusses the demonstration of Puerto Rican college students who are protesting austerity measures they say endanger their education system. Students at the University of Puerto Rico campus in Bayamon voted to begin a 72 hour strike. There other Universities in Puerto Rico that has started to shut down their campus. According to some of the students the government of Puerto Rico has not been distributing the money equally. They even say that the money is being taken out of institutions to pay debt, which is putting a freeze on funding for the University of Puerto Rico's budget. They also say that due to a lack of funds the University of Puerto Rico has begun eliminating professors and courses, which is interfering with students graduating. In order for this to stop the students has voiced their opinion to invoke the constitution of Puerto Rico that gives the number one priority, which is paying for the service of debt. The theory that is highlighted in this article would be framing, because the students are voicing their opinions on the unequal distribution of money that the government is doing to the Universities of Puerto Rico.

Black Lives Matter vs. the LAPD: Are the Police Unfairly Targeting & Surveilling the Movement?

In this article they discuss about a past event in Los Angeles where a certain amount of activists for the Black Lives Matter movement was arrested. They were arrested and charged for barricading the 101 freeway in November 2014. Supporters of the Blacks Live matter feel that the prosecution is part of an effort by LAPD and City Attorney's Office targeting and surveying the leaders of the movement. Through political opportunity the LAPD waited for the right moment to disrupt the movement and arrest important people of Black Lives Matter.

Movie night food for all

FOOD FOR ALL MOVIE NIGHT

The food stamp challenged documentary was really interesting. The first time I saw it 3 years ago made a great impact on me this is why I myself did the food stamp challenged to experience what it was like even though growing up my family and I also were food insecure and deepened on food stamps can the food the community bank would give out once a month. We did not have a lot of people show up for the movie but it was not as bad either we had some students or that is what matters. I loved the discussion we had and got to share a lot of the experiences of our own. This documentary this couple shared for the food stamp challenged was very empowering to me because they made me realize that many people face this problems every day. Food insecure is a big problem and I always question myself why American is is one of the riches countries in the entire world. But then I realized that many people are not aware of how it is a big issue that needs to be addressed. Only we the people can really change this in our country if we speak out. The government doesn't do anything about it because we the people do not do anything about it, we have control over it because it is our money and it is coming out of our check. This documentary shows how living on food stamps is mostly impossible to live on and if they do it is because they are eating unhealthy meals. This documentary shows how important it can be to grow our own vegetables and fruits can be healthier and also cheaper for healthy meals. Dumpster digging is also another thing many people do to have a deal a day like they showed on the documentary. Food Banks is one of the most important because I think they do a lot of good things by distributing food to families that need it. Food banks can be another good resources to use or even food pantries and hot meal sites. I honestly think there are many programs that can help a family out and not be food insecure, but many families do not have the transportation to go to programs like this or they are simply not aware that this programs even exist. Not all the food that Food Bank provides are healthy choices, but at the end of the day I do think it is better to have at least a meal of some kind in your stomach than not having anything at all.

Film: Unity
On April 21, 2016 our group set up a movie screening called, Unity. This took place prior to Earth Day, demonstrating the importance of our connection with the universe. In order to promote this film, our group and I posted flyers around our campus, as well as forwarding the event to friends on facebook. The whole idea behind the film was how "ego" has destroyed our relationship with the people and things around us. We have often became ego driven, selfish, and only concerned with our own greed. This film demonstrated the idea of consciousness. We have all became overwhelmingly disconnected with the true importance of life. Due to ego, we have destroyed the things important to us in simply surviving. For ex: Destroying our green environment for selfish reasons, killing animals for their natural resources (meat, fur, etc.) We have placed ourself ontop of the pyramid forgetting how everything beneath us is what helps us, be. Ego has also driven the human race to turn against each other as well. For example: Wars over drugs, money, fame, greed. We have become so disonnected that I feel we will soon be the cause to our own human extinction. The film has helped raise the importance of consciousness with our inner beings as well as everything around us. It is about respect, love, and understanding. Every little thing simply wants to survive as it fights for it's life just as we humans do. For example: You can follow a little ant around with your finger and watch it do anything in its being to avoid you crushing it. We all have this natural idea of survival, and simply wanting to BE. No one person, or species is greater than the other in the idea of consciousness or survival. We are all ONE and need to find balance to coexist.

#Deported2Death: Why Did Obama Deport 85 Muslim Asylum Seekers?

During the week of April 8, 2016, Obama had deported 85 Muslim asylum seekers back to their violent home countries. Many of these immigrants were held in for-profit correctional facilities for years. This is the first time President Obama has deported asylum seekers and it won't be his last. Soon after he also deported 100 south Asian's that were seeking safety from their violent countries. So for all the people that downgrade Trump. Maybe you should take a closer look in your own back yard before you go about chastising others. Fahd Ahmed the executive director of Desis Rising Up and Moving, says these South East Asian refugees are being put in detention centers as soon as they arrive in America. President Obama said he gave the refugees all a chance to declare their innocence. Ahmed states they didn't have a chance to prove to Obama that they deserve to stay in America. President Obama set these people up for failure by keeping them in detention centers and not allowing them to get the paperwork needed to prove they are allowed asylum. According to Ahmed there is proof that the reason for the Muslim/South East Asian's deportation is because of the United States discrimination towards them. More evidence of the treatment of these refugees' was gathered from a deported refugee himself. He said whatever proof of paper work shown to the U.S. government wasn't believed to be legitimate. He said no matter how much poof they had, the Americans said they would never grant them political asylum. While in these detention centers the people were treaded horribly. Their hands and feet were all tied to one another for three days at a time. Another careless act committed on these people was that they were put in body bags alive and they were not fed for the entire journey. After two years in captivity these detainees took to hunger strikes as a way to bring notice to their political unfairness. If it weren't for this social movement coming together. The public would have never been aware of this issue and these people probably would still be in these detainee camps. This type of social movement is known as political opportunity. This social movement succeeds when they take action at the right time.

DN! Seeking Justice for Samuel Harrell

Democray Now! Amy Goodmand interviews Samuel Hereras' sister,

Family members and friends of Samuel Harrell held a 5 day hunger strike seeking justice for the murder of her brother Samuel Harrell on April 21, 2015.

Some of the prison guards were known as "The Beat-Up Squad"  andas many as 20 guards,  kicked, punched then threw Harrell down a flight of stairs.   When the guards who had beat him, called for medical aid for Harrell the guards said Harrell had overdosed on K-2, synthetic marijuana. He died in the hospital the night after his brutal beating.

The autopsy  revealed that there were no illegal drugs in Hereras system. His cause of dealth was directly related to injuries sustained during the altercation with correctional officers.

The US district attorney is conducting an investigation, but 1 yaer after his death, all of the guards continue working at the prison and no charges have been filed in Herrell's death.

Cerrissa Harrell is seeking justice in return for the action of the hunger strike. She is frustrated by the lack of action by the justice system.

SNARL: Movie and flyers

Our group, SNARL (Spay/Neuter, Adopt, Rescue, Love) hosted a documentary movie "Unity"  on Earth Day, April 21,  2016.

We posted flyers across the campus advertising and inviting students.   Some of our team posted the ad on their Facebook page.

"Unity"  is a documentary that is a visually stunning and shocking.  The narration is done by many different celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres and Dr. Dre.   The documentary expresses the view of our connectivity to all living things on earth. We universally occupy and share earth, "aren't we all earthlings?"

It shows how destructive we as human beings are, the death of animals for our consumption, as scripture is interpreted people justify killing of animals for consumption and enthanizing domesticated animals, like dog and cats, as our God given rights of dominion over all animals.   "Unity"  shows the vileness of this idealization.  It links the serious health consequences of our diets to the consumptive lifestyle.  Humans create wars, perform murder, genocide, infacide, and so many heinous acts, as a means to an end…usually the end sought is related to ego and it's need for power. To control dominate, to feel good, and in it's interpretation of security.   The holocost is an example. Hitler, who was neither blue eyed or bond sought eugenics, eliminating all diversity of people who were not blue eyed with blond hair. The rony, of his plan for World domination and the perfect race.    As humans we are diverse, it is part of the beauty of our species.

"Unity" pulls the covers and shows how We are all interconnected in a very profound way.

UNiverse + humanITY = UNITY

In Argentina, recently appointed President Mauricio Macri has taken office and has launched new economic reforms. Including the layoffs of twenty thousand unionized public sector employees and tax cuts for mining corporations. This has caused an outrage among the citizens of Argentina and is a clear picture of a corrupt president and government. Thousand today have marched on Buenos Aires demanding not for a new president but for the right to work. Eduardo Belliboni a protestor is quoting with saying "we come from the poorest of neighborhoods without water, electricity, and have a problem with rate hikes. There's a tremendous problem with joblessness especially among the youth". With this new president he has made things worse. Eduardo and the thousands of people marching are using resource mobilization to have their voices heard. By gathering thousands of people together they are letting the president know they want a change in their current country.

Continuing stories out of Capitol Hill on April 18th, more people have been arrested for participating in civil disobedience. With the arrival of masses of people, they have been protesting big money influences and corporate lobbying in politics. Out of the masses that have gathered now more than nine hundred people have been arrested. The crowds that have gathered are displaying resource mobilization, Gathering masses of people in order to protest against their government. While they are being arrested, their protesting is proving affective. Bringing attention to the growing issues of how big money and lobbying corporate politics only undermines what a truly democratic government we have. Also, political opportunity theory can be seen. By attacking the government on a political front, they are increasingly advocating for a truly democratic government laissez faire from corporations and third party constituents.

Why do we need more soliders to keep fighting. The war should end already there is no necessity for this chaos. Obama needs to end this. There are a lot of soliders who are dying for thos war. I even forgot why we are fighting this war. How can the administration send 217 more troops to iraq to fight end ISIS. That is not our war anymore, its other countries. Let them fight there own battles. We should be worried about our country. We have a lot of people living in poverty and in other conditions. There is also much deliquency in our country to keep fighting other peoples wars.

Kasich, Cruz to Coordinate in Bid to Defeat Trump

This Summary depicts the Governor Kaish Ted Cruz that they have announced plane to coordinate the campaigns in effort to deny the front runner donald trump whos the Republican. Cruz claims it will focus on the May 3 primary in Indiana in to order to allow Kasich to compete with Trump in Oregon and here in New Mexico. Both Kasich and Cruz are hoping to keep Trump from reaching the threshold of 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination before the July convention. If Trump stays below that threshold, it opens the possibility of a contested convention, where delegates could switch their votes away from the candidate chosen in their state's primary or caucus after the initial convention ballot.

Thinking Globally and Acting Locally?

Environmental Attitudes, Behavior and Activism

In my readings on this article first the thing that it mentions is that they want to know if there is an empirical link between attitudes and how people's behaviors effect our environment. Second thing is that has we all know that women do better than men in most cases.  That's why they are catching up to us, that's men. More and more women are significantly more involved like global warming, climate control, hunger in general, and inequality on education for blacks, and Hispanics. Also "women are strongly held views toward environmental protection and are more willing to engage in such activities (Stern and Dietz, 1994, pp. 77-78). Second thing is that since 1970 and now there has been a steady increase in born public awareness of our environmental problems.  A recent cross-national study by the Gallup International (1992) found strong worldwide concern for the state of the environment. Even though there has been cited articles in demonstration of a weak correlation, there has to be some kind of situational factors that will influence the relationship between the both. Furthermore this article talks about the attitude-behavior consistency in our environment and how we respond in what to do with recycling behaviors. One good example is when you stated in our of your lectures that a while ago in the classrooms there used to be a blue trash can to put the recycling into it- and you and the others students, faculty, and others cared- however now there are no blue trash cans and now the university is paying a private company to take our trash and separate the recycle good and the bad. So now by want you said, in class I feel that your attitude is that you don't care or somewhat. Also let's take into account the socio-economic status of a family. With regard to this I feel that the more educated you are and the income says a lot about how you will want to recycle. Furthermore to show a weak relationship between attitudes and behavior-  let's take a look at the family who lives in a rural area and more than likely there are no recycling centers for about ten to fifteen miles away- how are they going to recycle.

Measuring Endorsement of the New Ecological Paradigm

The emergence of global environmental-which has been a major problem in our world and nations has finally come into light how this has effected not just human's activities but also the ecosystems on which our existence-and other living species are all connected of achieving a more living sustainable conditions. Take for example the air pollution in the valley- how it affects us all not matter what race, gender, income, and education you have this air pollution doesn't decimate- we all be affected and even getting asthma, and lung disease. In measuring I feel that when there are a number of studies on a certain topic or issues is when the public becomes aware of the situation if not they just don't care about it. Also this is due to all the social movements in regards to the environment-like earth day. In regards to the fact that the NEP was that on their focus was that we humans can have the ability to upset the balance of nature, which in my own point of view that it's up to God not us to change the balance of this paradigm.
