Protest March on March 4th

On Friday March 4th, our class assembled in the free speech area to fight for our respective organizations. The group that I represented was SNARL (Spay, Neuter, Animal, Rescue, Love), we went out and prepared various different signs for groups to carry and shout with us. At the start of our day we were tabling i.e. handing out flyers and talking to passing by students to raise awareness for our cause. Later on the raging grannies came and performed but eventually we began to march. Our march began in the free speech area and started very weak but once we got going tons of students began to shot for all of their organization and chant. For more than half the march we were all very charged and eccentric. As the area with greater population charged us we chanted more and more. By the library or walking to Shaw ave. was part of the greater areas were we could display our activism and generally appeared to be very effective. People would cheer us on and honk as they drove by, proving we were being noticed. However, one of the ways to improve the march would be to have it on another day. While march forth on March 4th is a tradition because of the date it unfortunately landed on a Friday when most of the students are off. So, changing the date is necessary for greater attention. Another key to having a stronger march would be shortening the route we took. While we covered a lot of ground not much of it had students for us to showcase our activism. Maybe pacing back and forth between two points could be more effective (going between Shaw and the library). Perhaps another way to improve would be to split the group have some go to another area. Covering more ground can be used for good if we target areas with greater amounts of people. All in all, the experience was very educational and a learning experience. Getting lost in the anonymity of the crowd for a noble cause is a great way to express how you feel about your issue and really pushes the strength of the individual together.
