Movement Paper - Film "A Place at the Table"

The movie discussion segment of the course was most interesting. I became familiar with most of the issues on the table from hunger to sweat shops and the environmental movement. The film that my team put on was "A Place At The Table." This documentary explored issue of world land use, how it is being used for commercial use and the local farmer has no way to feed his/her family. It also discusses the deterioration of farming soil, and how eventually the land will become less and less fertile and commercial farm industries will destroy the land eventually and food and food prices will be harder to sustain. The food movement uses these images to get the world public to take sides when it comes to basic rights such as access to food, and a means to feed your family. The food movement as well as many of the environmental movements are putting the pressure on farm industries and shining the light on food injustice around the world including the United States. This film especially touched my sense of community because much of the injustice happens right in surrounding communities, across town, or down the street from a college or university. The main issue is that no one owns anything except those with the money and power, and do not particularly give a damn about individual families at large, only the global opportunities to fill their pockets more. So what do you do? Go door to door to see who needs help? Well that would be a start. Community based organizations now take on the much of the responsibility some believe should be the responsibility of the federal government. But when an individual is in dire need the community is the way to go. However, to actually make changes in public policies that no longer see the individual will be the test.
