Push Polling Survey Tactic #3
Words: 390
Out of the five social movement events I took part in, I found the push polling to be the most difficult. As a group we created questions that were to be used during two hours of calling random generated numbers in Fresno County. I had a very difficult experience in the first hour that I did the push polling compared to the second hour. During the first hour I was terribly nervous and when someone would answer the phone I spoke way too fast and in most cases it caused the individual on the other line to decline or hang up. After the hour was through I was upset with myself and made a conscious effort to do a better the next scheduled hour. The difference between the two phone sessions was like day and night. I was able to speak clearly and found two people who were willing to take the survey.
After conducting the push polling survey there were some very interesting results from the 93 people who took the survey. The first being that when the question of whether or not people knew that it was costing them their tax payer dollars for those who are awaiting trial. The overall response was mixed in that 55 percent were aware and 32 percent did not know the affect it had on their tax paying dollars. The results indicate that if more people had knowledge of it having a financial effect on them one could conclude that there may be stronger support to fix the insufficient system.
Another compelling result was of the individuals who were asked that if an employee should be exempt from termination if held for an extended period of time. An astounding even response was found in that 50 percent were in favor while the other 50 percent were against the idea of exemption. I feel that one should not lose their job because of their inability to post bail. The other two intriguing stats that were found were that the majority of those interviewed made roughly 10,000 or less a year and 83 percent were female. It may be concluded that those of a lesser income may be more in favor of fixing the criminal justice system rather than those of a higher income.
