March 4th protest march
On March 4th our class participated in a protest march against social injustice. We were given the opportunity to inform people in Fresno State about the many social injustices present. The March 4th event was a worldwide event in which people around the world protested seeking a better future. The event had several attention getters which helped people be curious about our causes. Our instructor, Dr. Kubal, provided fruits and light beverages making it irresistible for people not to pass by. Dr. Kubal also brought the Ragging Grannies to sing on the free speech area. These small details were effective at attracting more people to the event. Our group, A Helping Hand for the Hungry, was able to inform some students about our topic. After we spent a few hours in the free speech area trying to inform as many people as possible we began marching. Our march was made up of several groups that each promoted social justice for their cause. I thought this was a great tactic. We (our class) mobilized as one group by first reaching a common cause; social justice around the world. Looking back at the event, I believe this is the best way at getting closer to social justice. We can effectively reach our goal by uniting with other groups experiencing oppression. The march was around campus and took about thirty minutes long to complete. I noticed that several students that were not part of our class joined the protest march. It was satisfying to see several other students engaging in a social issue event. Many students carried signs which our class helped to create during the thirty minute protest march. I carried a sign that showed 20.8 of Fresno County residents experiencing food insecurity. Overall I thought it was a great experience but we could have made the march more effective. We should have made the signs larger with bigger bold prints on it. We could have also put more energy in planning the event.
