CAPE (Chalk)

Evelyn Espinoza

Chalk

We went as a group to chalk around campus, another tactic of our social movement to create awareness. The Citizens Advocating for Pre-trial Expansion (CAPE) with some chalk went around campus writing statistics on our issue to grab attention of individuals walking through campus.  We chose to write statistics on the ground by free speech area and along the side of the library because as a group we felt a majority of individuals walk past there. The statistics would hopefully shock individuals or strike an interest so they could learn more and get involved. This was challenging because statistics had to get shortened so they could get read easily and some may have lost meaning when shortened. They were shortened so they were easily written and those walking past them could easily read them quickly because if they were to long often times those passing would not bother to read them.  I felt our group needed to organize a little better to strategically write our statistics. Overall this was a great experience I enjoyed chalking to bring attention towards an issue that is important and affects everyone. While writing the statistics I saw individuals stop and read and some even interacted with us and asked questions. It would have been more beneficial to also have brochures that would have more information for those who were interested to be able to get more information and get in contact with us to join our cause.
