Event #2 Tabling

Documentation of Tabling

Continuing on from the first chalking event is the social movement called tabling. Tabling consisted of three parts. One was flyers, two was a 2'x3' board with our groups cause stated on it, and three was answering interested people's questions.  The flyer portion of the event began in class with our group throwing out examples of what we thought the flyer should contain and look like. Dr. Kubal was kind enough to allow us over a weeks' time to turn this in so he could make copies. These copies would be passed out during the March 4th social movement event at Fresno State. On the flyer we wrote in big letters the name of our groups social movement cause. On the rest of the flyer we gave some examples and statistics of the biasness of today's justice system. I believe the flyers were a good way to get information out because a lot of people didn't have time to stop what they were doing and talk. This allowed them to read the flyer at a time that was reasonable for them. Secondly we used a 2'x3' board filled with info about our cause. Now this idea was used more for getting the attention of passer byers and getting them to come and talk with us. If we were to do this again I would make the board a lot brighter and use only a few short yet important sayings. Lastly we talked to people that were interested about the cause. I really wasn't looking forward to doing this bcause I have a fear of talking to or in front of people. My fear soon passed when the first couple people stopped to talk. Using the info that I had found I was able to get our point across without any problems. Two of the people I had talked with, actually recorded me on their phones to use in another class. When talking to them I used my life experiences to paint a picture of how bias the criminal justice system really is. When doing this the people seemed to really believe and feel the words I was telling them. If I were to change anything about this tabling exercise it would be to have an outside group come and portray are message also. This event was actually a very useful learning tool. It helped me to open up and not be fearful of something so natural.
