March 4th: free speech are/ table set up

I participated in the march of March 4th on behalf of MEW. MEW stands for, Men for Equality of Women. I arrived at 11 am and soon after helped Shai (group member) set up our table for the event. We began by setting up the poster board, and then proceeded to place flyers, snacks and bottled water on the table. The poster contained statistical information about the inequality women face in this country. Wage differences, media influence, and inequality in the work place are some examples of inequality depicted on the poster. I first feared that people passing by were not going to show interest or even approach our table. We handed flyers to people passing by, we informed them of the inequality women face in our society, and answered questions.

Within minutes of setting up, we had a couple of people approaching us and asking us about our movement. I was nervous at first, but became confident as time passed. We it was an unforgettable experience because of all the positive feedback we received from people. We had girls come up to us and thanking us. We reached saturation regarding feedback within the first hour of being there, with girls telling Shai and I "it is great to know that there are guys out there that support women" in their fight against inequality. I feel that our tabling was a success. Things took an interesting turn when guys approached us and asked us, "If guys who support women in their fight against inequality, considered to be feminist". Shai and I reassured them that if feminist is a term they wish to not be associated with, then to just continue supporting women because it is the right thing to do. People were shocked to learn that women make 78 cents for every dollar men make.

The event was a success because we had plenty of people signing up for email updates regarding MEW, we ran out of flyers, we ran out of snacks pretty quickly and we even got some people to go march with us in the march event. I think the only improvement MEW would need if we ever do a similar event is to make extra flyers, send more information to those who sign up for updates, and to provide people more statistics.
