Documentation of Chalking

The cause that our group is portraying is The Criminal Injustice System. We will be bringing awareness to this movement throughout the spring 2016 semester in five different ways. The first way that we did this is by using different color chalk to write on the cement in the free speech area of Fresno State. Before I get into details I will let you know that I wasn't very excited about this entire assignment. I have never participated in any type of free speech or social movement. Because of this I was feeling very uneasy or nervous about having to talk to people. Since the first thing our groups did was chalking. It allowed me to ease into talking and participating with others. The chalking assignment turned out to be a fun, yet interesting learning experience. After the first slogan we had chalked that night. The rest of what our group wrote just seemed to flow right out of our minds. I believe the chalking made a huge difference in how we were able to get our points across. Chalking allowed us say whatever we wanted without having to feel pressured by outside influences. We wrote some statistics about the biasness of the justice system towards the rich versus the poor. One of my slogans was "Money equals freedom". I figured this to be a very short but affective way of getting our cause's point across. Something that really impressed me was how a little assignment like this would bring a group of people together and allow us to let our shields down. This assignment lasted about an hour and a half, if we had more time I believe we could have done a much better job. It would have been nice to work on what we wanted to chalk in class. Other than the amount of time we had to gather our thoughts, I believe I wouldn't change a thing for the next chalking assignment.
