France: Scores Arrested as Up to 220,000 Protest Labor Reforms
In this article from Democracy Now that topic covered is the labor reform movement in France. The article discusses how President François Hollande has backed a labor reformation that would stop truck drivers from getting overtime pay and make it easier for companies to get rid of and fire employees. The labor reform activist protested in the streets throughout France and is estimated to have up to 220,000 participates take action in the protest. The protest ended with police official shooting tear gas into the crowds of protestors. The tactic of protesting in the streets also included truck drivers bringing their trucks and blocking off the roads. In total the protest cause eighty-seven participates to be arrested and escorted away. I feel that this was a very successful protest because they were able to command national attention and have over 200,000 participates in supporting their cause.
Youth Climate Activists Score Legal Victory in Mass.
In this article from Democracy Now the topic of discussion is climate change. The article discusses how a group of four teenagers were able to bring a case of green house emissions contributing to climate change to the state Supreme Court of Massachusetts. The four teenage activist claimed that the state of Massachusetts was failing to fulfill the legal obligation to reduce green house gas emissions, which are contributing to global warming. The four teenagers not only were able to bring the case to the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, they were also able to come out victorious in a ruling that found the state guilty of failing to reduce greenhouse emissions. This environmentalists movement was a very successful movement because they were able to get legal ruling at the highest state level behind their cause and in the end the state will also be forced to reduce the amount of greenhouse emissions released. Although the above article is much different not only in the social cause they were both successful because they were able to raise attention to their cause and get thousands of supporters to back their cause.
