After 36-Day Student Occupation, University of California at Davis Chancellor Is Put on Leave

            The article discusses the incident that led to student protestors being sprayed with pepper spray at point blank in 2011. This incident then was covered up using 175,000 in university funds to scrub the internet of negative comments of the University following this incident. University of California president Janet decides to put Chancellor Katehi on an investigatory administration leave. The students were outraged about the pepper spray incident leading to a planned 36 day sit in Katehi's office for her to resignation at the way she handled the protest in 2011. The article highlights political opportunity, because they took the opportunity with Katehi's mistake and used it against her and protested by doing the sit in for her resignation.

 

Northern Arizona U. Students Launch Sit-In as Fossil Fuel Divestment Movement Sweeps Country

            In this the article of Democracy Now a student protest takes place at the University of Arizona (NAU). The protest is part of a movement called "Fossil Free" that is pressuring colleges to address the issues of climate change. The student are proceeding in a sit in protest that is geared towards the divestment of fossil fuels. During the sit in protest eight student were arrested for staying past closing time. Within the past three weeks 62 students across the nation has been arrested fueling this movement. The theory that is highlighted in this article would be resource mobilization, because this movement has attracted many students from different university to lead the movement which shows solidarity. The arrests are also used as a frame to encourage students and the public that the movement is working.
