Social movements/ Dr. Kubal

Discussion 3

"Democracy spring…" democracy now reported on how people protesting the influence of big money and corporate lobbying in politics, got arrested. Over 400 people were arrested when doing mass siting on the steps of U.S. capitol. The groups call themselves Democracy spring and was made up of activists from about 140 different organizations. Millions of dollars have poured in to the campaigns as noted by Amy Goodman. Democracy springs hopes to end corruption. The use of many different social movements coming together for one cause is how I think this movement exercised framing theory. The issue the movement is trying to address is an issue that is very relatable and may resonate with potential supporters. Another important goal they want to accomplish is to ensure free and fair elections that give the people an equal voice. The arrest of the 400 people will serve as a political opportunity in the future that may bring about awareness and an increase in supporters for this movement. Even Democracy now endorsed democracy spring by allowing Kai to say, "we're calling on people across the country, wherever you are, to be part of this moment."

"Sanders calls for national fracking ban; Clinton attacks him on gun control" democracy now reported on the presidential candidate campaigns. This news report shows how Bernie sanders uses resource mobilization to address Fracking. As a presidential candidate, Bernie sanders possesses plenty of resources such as supporters, social capital, and news media coverage. Using all these resources, Sanders can inform more people about fracking. Fracking being the drilling of oil and gas. Bernie also acknowledges other groups; environmentalists, public health advocates, farmers, working families and religious leaders, that may appeal to a variety of possible supporters. The news report ends with Bernie saying that they (other groups) can accomplish anything.
