Social movements/ Dr. Kubal                          Discussion number 2

Framing theory is best applied when social movements make appeals to potential supporters by bringing about awareness of issues that people might relate. "Angela Davis on not endorsing any presidential candidate" by democracy now, shows an interview with Angela Davis regarding her view on presidential candidates. Davis "work around issues of gender, race, class, and prisons". Davis is asked which political party she endorses. Davis says she doesn't endorse any party and goes on to talk about the bad things associated with the republican party and democrat party. Davis talks about Donald trump not being fitted for the race because of all the hatred and violence associated with him and that he invokes. Davis also talks about Hillary Clinton avoiding the question asked by a black lives matter activist at a fundraiser event. However, Davis did not say much about Bernie sanders. Davis applies framing theory in this interview because she talks about issues that might relate to potential supporters. After calling out the wrongs of the political candidates, Davis states that we need a new party that can address all issues that exist in today's world.

The fight for 15 movement started out as a group of Mc Donald's workers protesting for a 15 minimum wage. "Largest pay raise for American workers in history?"  By Democracy now addresses the accomplishment of the fight for 15 movements in getting NY and CA to approve a $15 minimum wage. The fight for 15 movement practiced Framing theory because they brought about awareness of the difficulties many people on minimum wage face. Too many Americans work for minimum wage, and this movement made it clear that one cannot live on the federal minimum wage. Co-host Juan Gonzales of Democracy now said "about 5 million people are going to see their wages increase substantially over the next few years." Gonzales also mentions how impressive it is that in only a 3-year period this movement accomplished their goal, although they have a long way to go. I think the fight for 15 movements was successful because they brought about an issue that too many people can relate to, and this allows to appeal to potential supporters.
