Social movements/ Dr. Kubal                         discussion 4

"Special Report: Voices from Puerto Rico's Students leading an anti- austerity movement" April 06, 2016 democracy now, reported on college students from Puerto Rico that are protesting the serious measures they claim endangers the high education system. The students were protesting outside the treasury, Hacienda, and some got a chance to meet with the sub-secretary Juan Flores Galarza. The students address the framing theory with regards to the issue that many university students face. The problem the students are concerned with is that the Puerto Rican government used money from different public corporation, university of Puerto Rico included, to pay off a debt which resulted in a freeze of the university funding. In order to maintain themselves, the university eliminated professors and courses needed by students. I think that the students will succeed in their protest because they are working with an issue that many people such as students and graduates can relate to. If they apply framing theory correctly and may present, their issue in a nonviolent manner than it may appeal to potential supporters.

"Meet the green peace activist who confronted Hillary Clinton over ties to fossil fuel industry" democracy now reports on how an environmental activist confronted Hillary Clinton on her acceptance of donations from fossil fuel industry. The activist used the medias cameras as an opportunity to ask Hillary Clinton on her ties with the fossil fuel industry. The cameras were focusing on Clinton when this environmental activist confronted her. This was a great use of media as a political opportunity. Furthermore, Hillary responded with her being fed up of people questioning her on the subject and claim that opponent Bernie sanders made up those "lies". Her response put more attention on Bernie sanders which is good because media doesn't focus on Bernie sanders unless is for negative reasons. I think this activist killed two birds with one stone.
