Chalking Event

Leading up to our Sociology 122 Social Movements March Fourth event my group and I the Criminal Injustice System went out to the free speech area on campus and "chalked" the walkway. This experience was a new experience for me, as I had never done anything like this before; however, I really enjoyed doing so. My group and I drew pictures of handcuffs on the ground with criminal justice statements underneath them such as "Money Equals Freedom" we also wrote many facts such as the percentage of white collar crime prosecutions compared to those of drug offenses. I feel that this was a very powerful tactic because it allowed us to spread the word in a very eye catching way with bright colors that stood out as my fellow Fresno State students walked through campus. I also feel that this tactic was effective because many times students do not want to be approached when walking to class; however, because the message was spread throughout the floor we did not have to bother any students to spread our cause. Chalking the ground to spread our cause of flaws within the criminal justice system is something that I take great pride in because as I was walking through campus the next day with a friend they said, "have you seen all this stuff on the floor? Its pretty interesting huh?" although he was referring to all of the groups chalking as a whole I still felt very proud of what we had done. Overall the only thing that I think that I would change about this event is have extra chalk because we ran out of chalk pretty fast and also I wish I could have taken a picture from an aerial view because I feel that would be a pretty awesome photo to have in my scrapbook of things I have done here at Fresno State.
