A.H.H.H. Chalking/Fliers
The flier created by our group was really colorful. It consisted of two pages; the front of the flier had our mission statement along with several hot meal sites. The information for these places was kindly shared with me by Dr. Whitley. I have previously volunteered my time at Wesley United Methodist Church because of a class taught by Dr. Whitley. The front also had a website for more info. The back of the flier shows some facts on hunger including the fact that in the year 2012 Fresno was ranked as the fifth hungriest metro in the nation. We also included the differences between food hardship and food insecurity, these terms are defined differently according to the Food Research and Action Center and the United States Department of Agriculture respectively. It also has a few statistics that we found on the website feedingamerica.org. These statistics pertained only to Fresno County; one showed that 20.8 percent of the population of Fresno County is food insecure. The bottom of the back of the flier has the name, number and addresses of various food banks within Fresno. We handed these out to as many people as we could at the tabling event on March fourth.
The first time that we chalked we selected various statistics that we thought we most important; something that we chalked was how Fresno was the fifth hungriest metro in the nation. I liked using this info because it was the most surprising to me when I learned that fact. I do not think that many people knew that hunger was that prevalent in Fresno. Something else that I liked to do was write the numbers larger than the words, so that they may grab more attention. For example, we wrote the number 191,450 larger than the words "people in Fresno are food insecure." I think that chalking is a great tactic. Personally, when I would walk around campus and see chalking, I would take the time to read them. Even while we were chalking, people seemed interested and would read what we were chalking while we were in the process of writing. It is a great way to get the attention of people without having to engage them directly.
