Event #5

For this movement tactic event,  I knocked on people's doors in my cousins neighborhood for 3 days for 2 hours each day with a classmate of mine that was in my same social movement group. After I handed out flyers and talked to people about my social movement, I felt confident enough to do my last movement tactic by going door to door. Although most people didn't want to talk or get interviewed, I had good conversations with the people that did care but defiantly wouldn't do it again because some people were very rude and shut the door on mine and my other classmates face. When some people allowed me to give them an interview, my first question was usually "how do you feel about pre trail expansion for county jails and justice systems" and my other question would be "why is bail reform a problem." My social movement group is citizens advocating for pre-trail expansion. The people that have me their time would right away ask what pre- trail expansion was and what the problem is with a bail reform. I would explain to them what both are and tell them about the problem and many people would automatically explain why the social movement would impact them and what could be a solution to the problem. I also brought flyers with me to give to them in case they were interested and when they read how it affects us and how much it is costing us per year to incarcerate inmates, they got mad because most of our money is going to jails to help pay for their food and them being in jail when they don't deserve the treatment they are getting. Also, a few people were upset at the fact our jail populations are majority made up of pre-trial detainees who cause taxpayers to pay for it. Some people found it to be a good thing that they are expanding jails but questioned if it would cause the taxpayers more money. Talking to these people made me raise a lot of questions that I didn't know myself and sometimes I couldn't answer because they were already supporting the social movement I was talking about and have been looking into it longer than I have. Doing this movement tactic I wouldn't do it again because when I handed out flyers, it was more simple and I was a little more comfortable being at school and asking questions other than going to people's houses and talking one on one to people I didn't even know and most of them were older and knew more than I did so I couldn't really further talk about what they brought up because it was either facts I didn't know or just a different social movement that tied into mine. It was a good learning experience and I defiantly learned more coming out of it.
