Food and Hunger report

Randi Kearn Soc Mov

5-2-16 Food and Hunger Film

The film that our group presented was about a study done by a couple, on how far food stamps can go and is it possible to eat healthy food, when your on food stamps.

They received a budget, of what would be, $48 for a week for 2 people. At the end of the report they averaged 800 calories per day, which is way under the daily recommended of 1500-2000 calories per day. They ate healthy with three meals a day. They had to be well thought out and planned for the week, so that they were able to stay within the budget. I don't remember them eating any meat, but they did have eggs, and beans for protein.

I applied for food stamps before and I was told this was supposed to be supplemental not to cover the whole months worth of groceries. It's important to have healthy snacks between meals or, like the guy on the movie found, be hungry between meals. Not only did the couple eat healthy, but also made delicious meals. They also improvised and got some bread from a bakery dumpster, which is quickly becoming an alternative shopping method.

In New York there is a group that takes people on tours and teach them how to dumpster dive and get really good food. Lots of stores throw food out that has a close expiration d

ate, is day old, or a little wilt, but the amount of waste of good food is astonishing. The poor are starving but we throw out thousands of pounds of good food every day.

We need to stop waiting and also teach people how to shop, on a tight budget, for healthy food, and how to prepare healthy meals, instead of high carb, high sugar, garbage.
