Free All Bodies: Movie Night

Alice Lopez
SOC 122

Our choice of film for our movie night was Rape for Project directed by Jada Pinkett Smith. There are many films on the subject matter, but we wanted to choose one that was more recent. To help publicize for the movie night I created a flyer to post up around campus, created an event page on Facebook, and advertised on our social media page for F.A.B. I especially tried to use the social media to our advantage by inviting local organizations like Made for Them and Marjaree Mason Center. The main thing emphasized was that there would be free pizza involved!

One the day of the event I set up the same boards we used for tabling, in case people were interested in reading about some facts before watching the film. We began a little late than anticipated, but it was okay since it meant we would have a total of 4 guests. People grabbed pizza to eat and we began the film. At the end of the 1 hour and 20 minutes of film we had a discussion on what we saw. I felt that the discussion really helped to shape the thoughts of everyone attending, both male and female. The reason for that is that we laid out the condition, cause, problem, and solution. Laying things out like we did helps to paint the entire picture and helps to provide some type of solution.

Overall, if I were to do this event again I would try to reach out to more organizations and even classes so more individuals could come. The one guest who appeared because of our flyer mentioned that films on campus are usually empty. This could be because of a lack of advertisement or students rather do other things like work or go home. Something else I would do differently is research a film that shows the entire perspective of human trafficking and not just sex trafficking. This would help the audience understand how complex human trafficking actually is.
