Democracy Now 10
The two topics that I learned about on democracy now were about hundreds marching in Nigeria to demand rescue of kidnapped schoolgirls and a study of how 1 in 25 death row prisoners are innocent. The first topic was about hundreds marching on Tuesday for the kidnapping of young girls. The militant group was suspected of abducting about 230 schoolgirls during a night raid in the north east area a couple of weeks ago. Some of the girls managed to escape but more than 200 remain missing. There is an organization called a "Million Woman March" and demonstrators carried signs that was "bring back our girls" Halita Aliyu was interviewed and said that there has to be something done because every time girls to missing, it is a higher number and next time you never know, it could be a lot more than 200 and nothing has been done about it. "Each and every one of us needs to do something to arrest the unpleasant developments that are happening in the country, especially in the northeast," said Aliyu. Local human right groups are claiming that the girls have either been sold, forced to marry their abductor, and taken across the browser. It hasn't been clarified but if this is true and is what they think happened, it is sickening to believe that. It's shocking how so many girls can go missing and no body witnessed it. What did the girls that escaped do or say did it ? I am going to further examine this case. The other topic I read about was about a new study that says about one in 25 people sentenced to death in the US are innocent. The National Academy of Sciences looked at data over three decades. According to a study, about 340 people were wrongfully sentenced to die. If this is true I hope they figure out which ones are innocent because for them to be on death row and be innocent, is very sad and hugely mistaken.
