Tactic 4 – Flyers/Chalking

Our group "A Helping Hand for the Hungry" engaged in the tactic of creating flyers and chalking around campus to raise awareness about our issue which is hunger/ food insecurity. We created flyers that consisted of statistical data about hunger and food insecurity in Fresno as well as the rest of the country and world. We included statements such as "In recent years (2012) Fresno was ranked the 5th hungriest metro in the United States." The flyers also provided information on ways to help out our cause. It provided information about places where one can donate food as well as places to volunteer for the packaging and distribution of food for the homeless and those who are living in poverty. We also chalked around campus to raise awareness about the issue of hunger in our country. We chalked statistics such as "1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger in the United States." We also chalked the causes of hunger and food insecurity, which are mainly poverty, and scarcity of quality foods in certain areas. These tactics, in my opinion raised awareness about the seriousness of the issue because any person walking around campus can read a simple statement written on the floor. We tried to make the chalking as simple and easy to read as possible so that every student passing by, even if they are in a hurry, can easily read it and think about the issue. As a group, we do not know if we changed the perspectives of the people about the issue of food insecurity and hunger, but we did raise awareness around campus about our cause. I definitely enjoyed this tactic because, as a group, we were able to engage and connect with each other and with other students around campus for a great cause and hopefully change the way they think about food insecurity and hunger.
