For today's weekly assignment on Democracy Now there were two articles that captured my attention the most. The first article was "North Carolina: Duke Energy Cited for Dumping 61 Million Gallons Toxic Waste". What interested me about this article was the amount of gallons dumped into a river, which also supplies drinking water to the public. Environmental regulators in North Carolina have cited Duke Energy for purposefully dumping 61 million gallons of toxic coal ash into a canal that also connects to a river in the county it was dumped in. I thought it was extremely alerting because the river supplies drinking water to its residents. Reports say Duke Energy is undergoing a federal investigation for another coal ash spill in February that surrounded the bottom of another river with 70 miles of toxic sludge. North Carolina regulators have accused them for guarding Duke Energy over the coal ash incident. Governor Pat McCrory had worked at Duke for 28 years. The fact that the Governor had worked with Duke and already has a relationship with that company makes others want to question the fact that North Carolina has let the company slide so easily.
In another article in which I found interesting was headlined "Former Navy Football Player Acquitted of Sexual Assault". What was so interesting about this article was how I felt there was some injustice in this case. A former Naval Academy football player was acquitted for sexually assaulting a classmate. Prosecutors said the football player Joshua Tate assaulted the victim after she got drunk and passed out at the party. What disturbed me the most about this case was how the military judge ruled the case not proved beyond a reasonable doubt. The reason I felt there was injustice in this case because when they questioned the classmate they asked her questions very into depth. Topics that include, whether she wore a bra and underwear to the party, how she performed oral sex, and whether she "felt like a ho" after the incident occurred. For someone in higher power like an officer or a judge for asking a women those types of questions would make anyone furious and extremely uncomfortable, this was very shocking news to read for this article.
