Chalking Tactic #5

Words: 360

The final social movement group event was the entire group came together around the free speech area and wrote down facts from the C.A.P.E mission statement. Given that this was the last time the group would meet I could not help but feel a sense of sadness knowing that the social movement group would be coming to an end. I am not sure how the other group members felt but I am thankful for being able to be a part of the Citizens Advocating for Pretrial Expansion.

As a group we decided to chalk as much information as we could. One of the facts that were chalked was that on average it costs the state of California 47,000 a year to incarcerate a prisoner. This fact was chosen to show just how much the criminal justice system is costing the state while the money could be spent on education or broadening the availability of health care. The last fact that was chalked is that the jail population in California is made up of 71 percent of pretrial detainees which has a negative effect on the tax payers of the state. This issue can be deemed as a major contribution to the overcrowding in the jails and prisons.

A real life example was also chalked by the group that gives the story of a man who was accused of a crime and could not afford bail, which led him to being gone for a long period of time. The end result was the emotional damage and loss of employment. The last social movement event went about as well as I could have imagined. The only change I would make was that as a group we decided to keep the activist group rather than terminating it after the end of the semester. I would like to thank the instructor for creating the social movement group assignment. After completing the chalking with my group I was re insured that why I have gained a new appreciation for activism, and for taking a stand for those who are affected by the social injustices of the world.
