Colleen Soares - 2/21/14 - Weekly Discussion 1

Hi Dr. Kubal,

Here is my Weekly discussion.

Thank You,
Colleen

In this article, “Kids For Cash: Inside One of the Nation’s Most Shocking Juvenile Justice Scandals,” there is a very interesting story about how kids were being put into jail in Pennsylvania and the judges in charge of their convictions were receiving money from the owners and builders of the prison facilities. I think that it is totally wrong for kids to be put into jail because they are too young to recognize what they are putting themselves into. Every kid should be scared of going to jail, but if they steal things or do horrible things then I think that there should be reasonable punishment for the kids. Of course, older kids know what they are doing. The judges are wrong and immoral for doing what they did so I am glad at least one of them is in jail for 28 years. I am also glad that some of the victims will get a share of the settlement of $2.5 million even though money cannot make up for damages or death. I hope mistakes and wrongdoings like this can be avoided and corrected in the future.

In this article, “Freedom Summer: How Civil Rights Activists Braved Violence to Challenge Racism in 1964 Mississippi,” this year, 2014, marks the 50th anniversary of Freedom Day. Fifty years ago in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, hundreds of people marched for their rights, freedom, and justice which came to be known as Freedom Day. I enjoy that people today are still participating and celebrating this day. It was important to participate back then because helping each other out is good the community. In addition, unfortunate events took three civil rights activists’ lives. I think that this was wrong to do because they were not bad people. They just wanted to do the right thing and live their lives,
