Chalking: Food 4 All: Randi Kearn

The night we got to chalk the sidewalks at school was amazing. We wrote down statistics from our theme, Hunger for All, we drew pictures of food in different colors. We had a great time interacting with our team and with our other classmates. We talked about our social issues and talk to students passing by. I think this is an excellent avenue for the beginning of our protest.

I used to have a gathering at my house on the first Saturday of the month. My friends and I would invite anybody, and everybody, and we would talk about issues that were important to us, we would have music jams, beading, and yes, even chalk the sidewalk in front of my house. We did this for about a year and a half. I met all kinds of people, students, artists, homeless people, foreigners, (No, not the band), missionaries...it was always interesting.

I've often wondered, when asked for money from homeless people, what the right thing to do is. Usually, I'll go buy them a meal if they say they are hungry. On occasion, I've given them money. I just feel that it would be irresponsible for me to just give people money all the time. I don't want to enable someones habit (drugs, alcohol). I'm not judging, I am just going by my own experience, when I was on the street, I panhandled for beer money and being sober for 10 years now I feel I have a responsibility to feed the hungry, not feed the disease.

I think it's awful when people use their children, or animals to get money, but I will always feed them. And I try to help them get some resources. I am heartbroken at the plight of children everywhere. The abuses and neglect they endure. But that's a hole different issue.
