Participation Observation
March forth on March 4th was a multi-issue protest march demestrated by Fresno State students and faculty on the Fresno State campus. When I arrived at the meeting spot, I was surprised to see that there were roughly 50 to 60 people participating in this demestration including myself. The arrival and the destination point was at the popular "free speech area" on campus where there were a few tables cluttered with marking pens and poster boards so one could have the freedom to create a sign with an issue of their choosing if they didn't like any signs already available. There was a fellow student there at the table holding a stapler so he could connect the poster board onto the handle of what would be our protest sign which was 2 to 3 feet in height. Unfortunity I'm not that artistic so I went over and chose a sign with an issue on it already made. The issue I marched for was to stop animinal abuse which I thought was approppiate because I have a little poodle (Blue) and my son has a kitty (Nikki). Although my sign was already made I did however ask another student at the table to draw a few dog paws on the sign in which I colored them in.
As Doctor Kubal lead his very first march on campus, we all filed in behind him like a shepard leading his flock. I filed in right away and was up towards the front of the crowd, but after a few minutes I pulled myself over to the side and watched as the protesters passed my bye. I didn't want to miss a thing so I filled in at the end of the line, and that way I could take pictures of the line as we turned corners and such. We started in the middle of campus and walked out towards shaw turned east, then walked almost all four corners untill we finshed back at our destination/arrivel spot. Every so often Doctor kubal looked back at the line, usually as we turned a corner, and he waved his sign around which got the crowd all riled-up, so that was fun.
The multi-issue protest was quieter than I thought. The crowd was mostely students who ranged from 18 years on up and was diverse in ethnicty as well. At first, I thought this whole thing was going to be pretty gay, but at the end of the protest I was so excited about what we had just done and was pretty hyper as I made my way back to class and told all my friends what I had done. A few of my friends said they would participate the next time it happens again. I look at the pictures I had taken almost everyday, it was an awesome experience and would do it again in a heartbeat.
