Democracy Now #9

In Maryland officials at the state and local level are refusing to hold prisoners longer then they are supposed in order for immigration officials to take them into custody. The immigration policy states that local and state officials are to hold detainees as long as possible so that they are able to be picked up, taken into custody, and possibly reported. Another center that is also going against the immigration policy is the Baltimore City Detention Center. They have stated that they will only hold detainees longer only for immigration only if they were charged with or were convicted of a serious crime. There have been other states that are now going against immigration policy. One of the starters to this movement was where a state judge made a ruling that one of the immigrant detainees had had their rights violated. This particular detainee was held for 19hours after she should have been released just so that immigration could come retrieve her. In Carolina a fellow police chief is fired due to the fact that she was a lesbian. While serving as a chief for 20 years she has never receive any type of reprimand, but one day Mayor Earl Bullard dismissed her from the force and gave her 7 reprimands in one day. The mayor has been caught on tape making statements against the LGBTQ community and made a strong statement when saying that he would rather have a drunk person care for a baby instead of someone who is gay. Crystal Moore, the dismissed chief, expresses her frustration when making a statement that she is shocked that there still is no equality, she has been harassed for her way of life but this is definitely the worst and most public. All she has attempted to do has been to live a normal life.
