SNARL Chalking

First, the group went out onto the sidewalk between the Professional Human Services building and the Peace Garden to do some chalking for SNARL and the March 4th event. In order to draw attention to our cause, George drew a giant dog and cat. Between the two animals, he chalked our group name SNARL and I wrote out Spay/Neuter Adopt/Rescue Love underneath each of the letters. Above and to the left of the cat and dog, I chalked the statistic "2.7 millions adoptable animals are EUTHANIZED ANNUALLY ≈ 1 every 13 seconds." I also wrote this same statistic, and George chalked our group name, SNARL, by the booths and trees near the University Testing Center. In addition, group members chalked a game of hopscotch to draw some extra attention to the chalking. Along with this, Josie advertised the March 4th event by chalking "MARCH! ON 3/4 1:00 for Animal Rights!" and underneath wrote begins at 11. The words Love Animals were also chalked near the euthanasia statistic.

Unfortunately, many group members ran out of chalk quickly, possibly because they were applying too much pressure. At one point, I borrowed more chalk from another group. In addition, we felt rushed for time. If we were going to chalk again, it would be nice to have more time to be able to plan out what we were going to draw, chalk more, and put more details into what we were chalking. In the future, it also may be helpful for us to split up and spread the message out around campus, rather than focusing in a few areas in the middle of campus. The following days after we chalked, I had to go out of my way in order to see it. Students like me who do not generally walk in that area and may have been interested in our cause, may not have had the chance to see it and learn about the event. Furthermore, the chalking I did see when I walked by looked as if much had been wiped away, and it also did not appear to be drawing a lot of attention. The night when we were actually doing the chalking, however, it did seem to be getting people's attentions. Although quite a few people came to our booth at the March 4th event, nobody mentioned the seeing the chalking, so the chalking may not have been as effective as we would have liked.
