Democracy Now
April 13, 2014
This week on Democracy Now I found two interesting articles the first one is titled, "Drugging America's Veterans: Painkiller Abuse Spreads as VA Becomes Vets' "Drug Dealer of Choice. They look at the vetrans who fought in Afghanistan and Iran and what services they are receiving after coming back from war. The article states that the Department of Veterans Affairs has become drug dealers to these solders. Democracy Now shows a clip called, "Drugging American's Veterans" by Aaron Glantz. The video shows different stories of vetrans who have passed away because of overdose prescription. They are receiving multiple medications after they come home to solve their mental issues. There are several states that are giving more or less medication to veterans. Doctors are aware of this issue, but they keep prescribing the medication. These medications include opiates, they are similar to heroin. The number of death solders continues to grow. Glantz researched a decade worth of data from VA they a thousand cases where VA paid family members money because of the death of a veteran.
Another story from Democracy Now is titled, "Treating Humans Worse than Animals: Prison System Voices Decry Solitary Confinement of Mentally Ill". The maltreatment of inmates is becoming more and more evident. A correction officer was arrested he was charged against the civil rights of Jason Echevarria. He died after eating a detergent it was given to him when his cell was flooded by manure. There are several stories of inmates who are being treated like animals. Psychiatrist Dr. James Gilligan, he is trying to reduce violence in penitentiaries. He tells us tells us, this "is called a self-fulfilling prophecy: We say these are animals, they are going to behave like animals, then we treat them so that they will." Dr. Gilligan also tells us that instead of helping the inmates and giving them mental assistant they are being placed in prisons. Individuals who are mentally ill and are placed in a prison can be very dangerous these people are in danger of killing themselves. Nevertheless, Lance Lowry tells us there some programs that have been working for the inmates for example; Gang Renouncementing and Disassociation programs. In these programs gang members are given the tools in order to socialize into society as different people and leaving gangs behind.
