Being in the animal right group, A.R.F/Fighting For Paws we decided to show the movie Blackfish. We were able to pass out flyers and post them around campus and over 11 people came, which was a good turn out. Blackfish is a documentary on orca whales which are famously known to be found in places like Sea World or other types of aquatic parks all over the world. The documentary focuses on orca whales being such wild animals and how it is merely impossible for them to survive in captivity. Orca whales are captured at a young age and are taken to these water parks where they are put into confined spaces. An animal that weighs over 6 tons and is over 26 feet long should not be kept in a tiny pool for the rest of its life. Orca whales are known to suffer from emotional issues and aggression which leads to the attack of people or other orca whales. As Blackfish explained this is an issue that is most likely to be found in aquatic parks versus the ocean where they roam free.
After the movie was over we had a great discussion about how orca whales and animals in general should not be used in entertainment places like the circus, aquariums, aquatic parks, or even be used for events like bull riding. A lot of the students that attended were surprised by the facts that the movie stated and how small the tanks were that these animals are living in. Many people fail to realize the reality of animal abuse that occurs in the entertainment world. I shared with the people that attended the movie that in the beginning of April a bill was proposed to ban orca whales from Sea World in San Diego. Not much information has been released on the bill rather that it was influenced by the movie Blackfish.
