Push polling summary

The way we conducted our push polling was we used the catishack website to dial random numbers so that we could ask people to take surveys. There were many people who would answer the calls but that did not have time to take surveys.  For those who did take the surveys they answered multiple questions that had to do with pre-trial expansion. The questions included the knowledge they already had on the subject and also the opinions they had towards the subject as well. When asked the question "do you know about the prison realignment program?"  It would appear by the results that not many were aware of this program. The second question that was asked had to do with individuals being detained while awaiting trial and how this affects tax payer dollars. This question showed that more of those who answered the survey were aware of this. Over 52% of respondents answered that they agreed and were aware. Then when asked the question "Are employees exempt from termination of employment if detained for a long time?"  the two responses to this question were close in numbers. 47% of respondents answered true and 53% of respondents answered false.

 Now when discussing the results of the race of respondents the most predominant race was Hispanic (55%). The second highest race that participated in the survey was White/Caucasian (23%). Black/African, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American all were 5% of respondents. When discussing the age of respondents the majority (71%) were in the range of 18-29. There were no respondents in the age range of 40-49. Those in the range of 30-39 and 50-59 were close in numbers, and 60+ had the least amount of respondents.  The majority of respondents was in the 10,000.00  income range. Lastly, 83% of those who agreed to take the survey were females.

On Tuesday March 4^th, I attended the event my class put on. I had to sit down at my group's booth for an hour for our March 4^th event, which I helped represent my group C.A.P.E. Our group stands for Citizens Advocating for Pre-trail Expansion also known as C.A.P.E. As I was sitting at my table many people came around to see what we were doing and what our problem was. More people were actually interested to see what we were focusing on than I thought would. Our problem is that more serious crimes can merit higher bail but this is not always the case. Our biggest issue surrounding bail and it is problems is the fact that regardless of the crime, anyone who can make bail can spend the money and go free until his or her trial. Also people who do not do serious crimes, but can not make bail tend to get stuck in jail/prison while people who do serious crimes can be let go just because they have the money for their bail. When people saw this they became concerned because many of them could either relate to this problem themselves or knew some would could. Some of the people who came to our booth had wonderful questions to ask. I personally was not able to answer all of them, but some of my other group members were able to. One of the questions I had to answer was if Citizens Advocating for Pre-trail Expansion could really effect those who have not and most likely will not go to jail. I had to explain that it does effe4ct us because when we pay taxes, some of our money goes to the jails and prisons. I was able to tell them how some prisoner do crimes right after they get out of prison or jail, just so they could go back. The people I told this to where shocked and did not believe me until I told them that my father is a correctional officer, and that is what he was told by some of the prisoners. I also told them how my dad told me the prisoners have a better life in prison if they can not afford anything outside of prison. We pay for their television, food, activities, and things like that so they rather live somewhere were they get everything for free. Another question I was asked was about overcrowding in prison and how that works. I was not to sure, but I told them overcrowding was a problem in some prisons and jails because of all the people who can not afford to make bail and how many people are put away for some little harmful crimes. Over all, this experience was fun. I enjoyed letting people in on what is going on in our world and finding out how many people actually cared and wanted to help out and try to change what goes on with bail just because of my group.

Chalking Summary

                The purpose of chalking around campus was to bring awareness to our cause, which is pretrial expansion. We wrote down some important statistics in the free speech area in front of the library. We chose this location because many students pass through this area, and this allows for our statistics to be viewed by a larger amount of students, which will hopefully lead to the alteration of some opinions on the matter. Something that could have been improved would be the variety of statistics that we used. If we had a broader variety, we would be able to bring more awareness, and it would be more likely that by reading the statistics someone would gain an interest in the cause. The statistics could have also been shortened so that they were easier to write and also so that they are easier for those passing by to read. Students are often in a rush while on campus and if the statistics are too long they will not take the time to stop and read them, but in contrast if they are shorter they may be more effective. Furthermore, better organization and planning of where each statistic would be written so that there was no repeating of statistics. One thing that could have also helped to make this activity more successful would be to have more communication within the group so that all members were present. This would also allow us to cover more ground on campus and spread the word more effectively. We could have also posted some flyers with more information on pretrial expansion around campus. This would also help to expand those who were exposed to our cause. This activity was altogether  a success in its execution, there could have been some improvements but with the time and supplies that we had, we were able to do the best we could.

Tabling as a tactic for March Fourth for March 4th. 

I attended an event on campus to spread the awareness about criminal justice along with other groups that shared their social movement. The tabling tactic on campus was to raise awareness about our social movement and pre-trail expansion. I feel the the tabling tactic is perfect to engage the public to support and even join our social movement and raise awareness to the issue. As I say at the table I realized how many people actually take the time out to support what we are fighting for along with giving us their input and sharing awareness and spreading the word themselves. Having a table out on campus is a great way to spread awareness of course because so many people pass by the table and even if it's just a glance, they see that someone is trying to make a difference and hopefully will eventually take action on their own. Planning the event was very simple because my professor set it all up for us, our group just needed to bring along information on what exactly my C.A.P.E group is trying to get out of this process along with advertising it with a poster board. We also had people come and sign their name and put an email because they are  interested in what we are fighting for and want to make an impact also. Not only do we try to have people be involved and get a bigger group to support our social movement, but we try to connect to people in a way that they feel our social movement needs to be noticed. Overall my group got more people involved than I thought and since I have never experienced that before, I was so happy with the outcome because many people were supportive and also very interested in our social movement just as much as we were. 

Movie Event Summary

Movie Event CAPE

(March 27^th, 2014)

               In order to publicize this event and attract students to attend we posted flyers around campus. We posted the flyers the day before the event, which is the reason why I believe there were not many students that actually attended the event. We should have posted out flyers earlier in the week so that more students could have viewed them and possibly attended. We also could have made the flyers more creative so that they would catch the attention of those who walked pass them on campus. During the actual event before the movie was shown we discussed relating issues to get students thinking critically to prepare for the movie. Members of our group also spoke on the issue that was focused on in the movie, this was so that those who were in attendance could have some background on the issue so that they could better understand what was being discussed within the video. Following the movie we also had another discussion to go over some of the interesting and important facts that were shown in the movie. I feel this was a very good way to really get the message and focus of our group across. Students were able to see why we chose this issue, why it is so important, and the effect it has on society. The discussion, I believe, also helped to alter the opinions of those in attendance on our issue. This event could have been more successful if there was more advertising and circulation of the event around campus. Another thing that could have possibly improved attendance would be to send out a mass email to students including all details of the event and also a summary or preview to what the movie is about so that students are able to know what the movie will be like. I believe this would catch the attention of more students and make them want to attend the movie.

Event #3

Today I attended a documentary that pretty much is focusing on what my group is focusing on. The C.A.P.E. Group stands for Citizens Advocating for Pre-trail Expansion and focuses on trying lowering cost of bail bonds and alternatives and the problem that there is so much over population in the jails and a lot of the people in prison caused such little crimes. Also many people are held for longer than needed which pretty much causes a back up in the nails. We watched a movie called "Broken On All Sides." It focuses on mass incarceration across the nation and the intersection of race and poverty writhing criminal justice. It advocates change around the overcrowding of the Philadelphia county jail system. It provided me with interesting facts such as how much incarcerated Americans increased so drastically since 1920! Also I knew stereotypically and now as fact, there are more black in jail than Hispanic and white males almost put together. Something that really bothered me and quickly caught my attention was when it showed a clip of cops brutally hitting a black male and he was so helpless raising his hands for them to stop and they continued to hit him while people around screamed to stop. It was a very interesting movie that I plan on sharing with my friend because she is totally into petitioning for this very same reason. I liked that this documentary aims directs to answer questions and provoke questions on issues brought upon by people out in the public. I am so glad I had free time to attend this movie ! I got very lucky with the group I am in because after watching more and more interviews going on, it makes me so interested to hear peoples personal experience. I loved listening to the activists Khalid Abdul Rasheed and Theresa Shoatz! I will continue to further explore into cases and interviews on people that are on different sides of the criminal justice system. 

Event 2

March Fourth for March 4th

I attended my first march after I sat at my booth to represent my C.A.P.E. Group. As people started to gather for the march I was so impressed with the turnout. I think people that were at the mic trying to get people to come attend also are what got peoples attention walking by. A lot of people stopped by to make signs such as, " Hungry for justice" "March fourth on march 4th" Stop fossil fuel 

Freeze tuition sign petition" and  

"Love your animals don't abuse them." There were so many different people supporting every group. The March didn't last as long as I expected and I was totally into it. I learned that we had to walk at a steady pace, especially for me I am a very fast walker so I was in the back just following along with everyone. I actually seen some people tag along as we were walking which was really surprising to me because I didn't expect people to suddenly join in. Everyone was holding their sign very proudly and It made me very proud to be along the side of all of them holding up my sign. I feel like this experience made me want to start to be more involved with march's because I never knew how much it could catch people's attention and make them very interested in what we are learning and studying in class. We couldn't chant in certain areas but when we did it was awesome. I was a cheerleader so I was so proud to be able to chant for something that I stand up for. After the march many people were talking about it as they walked away, including me. My friend and I were so happy about the turn out and can't wait to continue to do more.

While I had to sit out at our booth for March 4th, I represented my group C.A.P.E. which stands for Citizens Advocating for Pre-trail Expansion. As I was sitting at my table many people came around to see what our problem was and were very interested to see what we were focusing on. Our problem is that more serious crimes can merit higher bail but this isn't always the case. The biggest issue surrounding bail and it's problems is the fact that regardless of the crime, anyone who can make bail can spend the money and go free until his or her trial. When people saw this they seemed to be very concerned because many of them could very much relate ! Looking at out flyer we were handing out they were really shocked to see how it affects the community. Criminal justice reformers point out that this situation costs the taxpayers about $100 a day per prisoner and that is a huge problem because all of us are getting charger for people in prison that we don't even know and probably don't even support what they are in there for. We want to be able to lower the cost of bail bones and alternatives to the Monterey bail system. If we were to release people on electronic monitoring it will be likely to change as California enters it's second year of realignment in the fall. Counties will be left with the option of overcrowding or even just letting people be free because they can't handle them in the system anymore which I think is very unsafe. I was really surprised and impressed with the outcome because we got many people to sign our petition and many people were totally interested to see our flyers! It was a good turn out and It was my first time doing it so I was so excited about it.

Marching (March forth on march 4^th)

                Marching around campus advocating for each of the group’s causes was more exciting than I thought it would be. Having such a large group marching with us around campus made it feel more empowering. It also helped grab the attention of many people walking around campus. All of the signs that were created for the march were a big factor in grabbing the attention of those we passed. One thing that could have been improved with the signs could have been the time we had to make the signs. With our group the signs that we were able to make were rushed and they could have been better and more appealing if we had more time. While marching I feel it would have been more beneficial if the group collectively chanted some phrases for each group’s causes. Most of the march was silent with only a few randomly yelling sayings for their cause. This did not really get the attention of many. Also the route in which we marched could have been better. Most of the sections where we marched were empty and there were not very many people around. Also the organization of the group could have been better by being closer together and for not so many falling behind. For those who did see the march I feel that the signs did interest them and they were able to see what we were fighting for. I don’t believe the march had as much of an effect on the views people had about each issue, than the actual tabling. With the march people were only able to see our signs and not be able to actually interact with each of us. I feel the march did not alter people’s opinion on our issues very much. The only setup that was really required for the march was the making of the signs. Another thing that helped with this event was the advertisement that was placed in the Collegan. This is something that I have never done before and honestly never was interested in doing but now that I have actually been involved in something like this it has actually interested me and made me more interested within this area.

Tabling at March forth on March 4^th

                This event took place in the free speech area and included many different aspects. In order to prepare for the event tables were put out and we also created boards and flyers to attract people to come to our table and interact with each group. Our board included the flyers that we created for the event and we also included different statistics on the board to catch people’s attention. Another thing that was incorporated within the event to attract people was food and drinks. The food and drinks did very well attracting people over to the area but not all of those who got food and drinks came to the tables. I think if the tables that contained the food and drinks were closer to the tables then more would stop by the tables and we would be able to attract more to the tables just by simply engaging them and possibly asking them questions. Another thing I feel that could have Improved the event would be to have advertised earlier. Chalking around campus would have helped and also flyers around campus so students could be aware of the event. More time decorating and creating our own boards and signs could also have been beneficial. A lot of the sign and board making were rushed and did not come out as well as they could have if we had started them earlier. While actually tabling and talking to students that were passing by I was able to actually see how it is to get involved and fight for a cause. Many that came up to the table were really interested in learning more about our cause and it made me feel good when they actually took the time to have discussions with our group about the issue. I believe the event went really well and many were able to learn more about important issues and how they can help within these issues.
