I did not like push polling, Immigration is a sensitive subject and was saddened by some of the responses. Since everything is electronic, I joined yellow pages and used it to get phone numbers. I ran a few searches with different last name in Fresno. The last names I used where Smith(5pgs), Robert (5), Sanchez (6), Lopez (6). I got pen and paper and started to make calls on Tuesday and Thursday evening between 5-6pm. I noticed the Caucasian last names weren't open to immigration or hearing immigrant's contribution facts. The Hispanic last names some were open to favor immigration and others weren't comfortable talking about it. I did notice that the older Caucasians were open for a bit longer discussion. The conversations I did have they understood their work is hard and appreciate what they do but "the law is the law". Another caller had no idea they could buy homes and contributed to our economy and was thankful for some clarification. Some of the homes with Hispanic last names spoke Spanish and so do I, this made it easier to communicate. On the Spanish calls I noticed at first the caller was hesitant in talking to me, after a few questions she made to me such as, "where and why are you calling from/me and am I being recorded"? I reassured I'm just doing this for school purposes. She replied she works in the fields and many at her work are in fear. She said she contributes and everyone in her house. She is working on getting paperwork, so she can come out of the shadows. She assured me she just wants to work in peace, she's not here to cause harm or take anything from anyone they don't want. I learned we still have some ways to go on immigration. I'm not sure how successful the push poll was but I do hope it changed one heart and one mind.
