Picket Tactics

Name: William Reyes

Course: Social Movement Tactics

Information Picket on Campus Tactic

The first part of the non-violent collective action was organized in a group discussion about the name of the cause focusing on the four foundation of the framework of the massage.  (1) Diagnosis, (2) Prognosis, (3) Motivation, and (4) Identity, with the first part we diagnose the problem of infraction for the poor, the prognosis that hefty fines hurt the poor and the motivation that anyone who drives can be affected if they are unemployed and arrest could diminish the opportunity for employment. The identity in general is for anyone who has a vehicle. So we began with the chalking defacing public places to get our name out in hope that would peak peoples interest and approach our bench for our second part in the tactics of social movement. To raise awareness for our cause and  create an opportunity for attention, with the use of chalking to get younger people to support our cause in the hope that they would join us in the second part which will be to do a public demonstration of support for cause of how the high cost of infraction hurts the poor. For the second part of the tactic is "Information Picket on Campus Tactics" the goal in this tactics is to setup tables with information such as flyers that we will be passing out to people inquiring about our cause. The goal in passing information tactics is to get people to join our cause. We devise flyers with emotional stories about the way arrest and infraction impact our society but more specifically individuals who by no fault of their own other than the inadequacies of the criminal justice system. People with limited opportunities diminish even further down. We presented statistical data and cost of initial fines that have a tendency to turn into more serious form of infraction that hurt the people in our community, furthermore, we had to make our banner colorful to get people to join. Another aspect was that other movement raising awareness for our cause increase the amount of people, thus given us an opportunity to talk to them when they approach our table. The process is to reach them with the message and intention to the root of the problem and solution.

The experience in recruiting people to participate in the cause for the "Injustice of the criminal system." the event took place early in the morning, giving us time to setup tables and make our banners with the messages with flyer that had the information about the cause was printed earlier by our professor which at no cost to our group. In reality the whole enterprise requires time and volunteer support. Because the resources required to send our message out cannot be drawn on the air. But we were fortunate for the cost of the flyer and material for building picket signs was provided by the instructor. On the day that we began to raise awareness we got set up and it took a little bit of time to get the tables up and decorated. A suggestion or rather advice is best if you have all the material ready a day before the event. In that way you can spend more time talking to people in the morning. Having some food can help bring people in, because they would inquire first about the products and treats on the table and establish a first contact with the unsuspecting recruit. Furthermore, those who approach the table are more receptive and more willing to listen to your message about how the justice system is broken. While you hand out flyers began a small conversation about how infraction cost too much. Fortunately many of the people who got to the table took our flyers and read it ask some critical question about if there was some bill being passed in congress that is meant to solve the problem of increase cost of infraction. Unfortunately as there was none, I felt compelled to state of the fact that there is no such bill being passed in congress. Some shake their head in agreement and moved on. Now I think I should had lied about the there was a bill aim at fixing the problem. But at the time it seems unnecessary because it can damage some proposal for addressing the problem.
