Free All Bodies: Marching

Alice Lopez
SOC 122

The planning for the march was not too extensive. As a group we made posters that were short and to the point. We understood that you shouldn't write too much since people need to understand and read your message while moving. Therefore, we made posters that said "Free All Bodies," and "End Modern Day Slavery." While tabling we also encouraged people to come out and march with us on campus. As mentioned before, we also made small flyers that invited more students to march forth on March fourth.

The day of the event, we started later than was planned since one performance was delayed. We began the march on campus and most of our attendees were there for extra credit. There were few that we met who were genuinely interested and were out there at their own free will. Most of the march took place directly on campus when there weren't many students. Which for me it felt like we could have altered more opinions of students if we marched on campus during a peak hour and also more citizens that were driving if we would have marched on the curbside around the campus. Another item to improve for the future is chanting while marching. As a group we briefly discussed chants that we could use and how we would repeat each chant three times in a row to have a greater effect: FREE ALL BODIES, FREE ALL BODIES, FREE ALL BODIES.

Overall, I feel that each person contributed an equal amount of work when it came to marching. The only thing would be to encourage participants to have more energy, especially because crowds feed off the energy we provide. Either way we were all helping each other out as a class.
