Summary of Democracy Now -Exclusive Video: NYPD Arrests Bill de Blasio Adviser for Filming Arrest of Homeless Man

The New York Police on the hot seat yet again for over excessive use of force and violating civil rights of citizens. Unbeknown to the police that Five Mualimm-ak is part the Task Force under the New York Mayor de Blasio. Mualimm-ak and other African American activist were sited and charge with disorderly conduct along with other charges that are still pending trial. The police arrested Five Mualimm-ak, Joseph J. Hayden alone with other five members that inquire in the arrest of the two gentlemen above. In the video Mualimm-ak explain the event that lead to arrest. He explain that he took an interest in monitoring the interaction between of police and a homeless person; it seem that everything was going perfectly fine, the police was polite and courteous with the homeless person. Everything was fine while they try to get the homeless into an ambulance. A minute later another patrol vehicle arrived to assist the officer with the homeless guys. Toward the end the officer manage to put the homeless in the ambulance. Then the police turn to the observers and asking to break up and to keep on moving. But Maulimm-ak and Joseph Hayden were video recording the incident and they became the target for intimidation which ended with the arrest on these two individuals that were doing nothing more than being objective observers. It seem that the officer felt that Maulimm-ak and Hayden were disrupted and proceeded to arrest the two gentlemen and it escalated to the point where they had to handcuff on both these individuals. They were taken to jail and process both of them as criminals. They keep them in detention for almost two day. The worst part is that they Maulimm-ak and Hayden were abuse and they express their medical condition which the police did nothing about their grievances and chose to ignore it altogether.  All because they were black and were video typing the police.

The theory of political opportunity emphasis that the political systems is weak it creates an opportunity for movement to act and challenge the status quote. The experience that Maulimm-ak and Hayden were arrested for being bystanders shows that the system is oppressive toward minorities. Therefore an unjust system is reveal by the actions of repressing members of the minority with the least political power. When repression takes hold members mobilize to their resources to bring attention to the public of the problem, thus, recruiting members that who share the same interest. In that manner they also are able to recruit political awareness to subject that are in need of change. In this way they are able to create interest groups with power that can encourage the change in the system. Just as Maulimm-ak and Hayden show that there are discrimination towards blacks they can bring their experience as proof that political change is still important.
