In the Democracy Now! News story, a panel of 3 experts discusses the current situation with the sudden death of the Supreme Courts most conservative Judge, Antonin Scalia. The Republican Party is planning to block ANY nomination to the Supreme Court that President Obama makes fearing that the 9th and newest judge will provide a liberal swing in all cases heard before the Supreme court. The panelist state that to have the court go 11 months without the 9th judge could create some inconsistent and unjust decisions left to the lower courts who have heard and made decisions that lead to the parties litigating the matter to the highest court. There are issues on immigration ,labor unions, reproduction and death penalties' on the courts calendar for this year. If the republicans are successful in preventing Justice Scalia's' seat to remain vacant, it will be the first. One of the guest's stated that there have been a remarkable 17 Supreme Court Justices' confirmed during election years.
This is a political opportunity. The Democrats and Republicans will be struggling over the appointment because the Supreme Court provides additional power for such cases as "Citizens United" and rolling back voter protections was permitted through the conservative justices, including..perhaps especially Justice Scalia.
