Social movement tactic 2: Tabling

Before the March 4th march protest, we had set up a table in front of the Free Speech area, where we had information about our social issue. Our issue was Hunger, and we had flyers on the table that we were handing out, and we also had a big board full of statistics and information about hunger here in the Fresno Valley. I was surprised because there was a lot of students that were interested in learning about the issues. We would give them statistics and ask if they knew that it was an issue here in Fresno. They would say no, and some were very surprised when they would read the statistics on the flyers and the information that was on the board as well. I felt somewhat scared because it was the first time doing something like this. I actually liked the fact that students would come up to our table and be interested in learning about our issue. I had seen other tables up like that before but I just never really had time to go up and read about what they were doing. I would always get a flyer but never really paid attention to it because I was either going to class of coming out of class and going into another. I feel like setting up tables more often, students would have more knowledge of current events that are going on in the Valley and also on school campus. I had a great time tabling because I felt like I was doing something good, and regardless of the grade, I think I would like to get more involved with other groups and continue to do something positive not only for me but the community. The group did really good we were all nervous and scared because we didn't know what to say, but it was easy when we would just say the statistics that we saw on the flyer like 1 in every 5 kids are at risk of hunger, and that 50 million Americans struggle to put food on their table. They were surprised, and to be honest so was I. I learned so much from this class, and from this issue, and it made me realize, that I haven't been so great at appreciating my food, and now I try to cook for three, and not too much as to having leftovers that we won't eat.
