Our group, S.A.F.E., students against fuel extraction showed a movie on campus this Monday called Heat. This PBS documentary highlighted the main concerns relating the use of non renewable resources and the effect this has on our environmental. The damage that is caused by burning fossil fuels is irreversible and in order to reduce green house gases, we need to drastically decrease these by 60-80%. The burning of fossil fuels is the 2nd largest contributor to green house gases. Before the burning of fossil fuels and the industrial revolution occurred, Co2 levels sustained for hundreds of years. There are over 600 coal powered plants in the world! Fossil fuels require a lot of energy to produce and generate a lot of pollution in its wake.
The people in power, i.e. Senate, are those dictating our fossil fuel changes. Their interests are for the shareholders, funding, rather than for the public. This type of corruption that occurs protects the interests of the companies that benefit, always in favor of the special interests. Seriously changes need to occur and soon if we want to stop climate change from happening along with the other side effects emerging as a result from fossil fuel burning.
