Democracy now 3
Democracy now this week had an interesting story that I had thought was over. The fact that the N.S.A was spying on most of American citizens emails is widely known thanks to Edward Snowden who has earned the term whistle blower among most media outlets. This story seems to continue with the shocking recent discovery of a program named mystic which has a logo of a wizard with a magic staff as its mascot. This program records all phone calls made to and from any undisclosed foreign country. This surveillance system stores billions of recorded phone calls for thirty days. The Washington post will not let the countries names leak so there is no way of knowing which countries specifically were being targeted by the system. White house representative on the matter Jay Carney declined to address the matter. Edward Snowden himself spoke through a robot that rolled out in a conference he was in Russia at the time and urged all who were listening to fight the surveillance.
Russia seized Crimean navy base. The seizure followed the killing of a Ukrainian in Crimea by unknown parties perhaps as a response. Russian president Putin declared that Crimea is a part of Russia and denounced its upsurge claiming it has always and will always be a part of it. Putin criticized western policy as hypocritical claiming that the united states only deems what is fair according to their motives and agenda; therefore, showing bias. John Kerry denounced Putin's remarks in a press conference. With both nations unwilling to resolve the issue Crimea seems to be under Russian control for now; however, the Obama administration has threatened to add many more sanctions to those already in place against Russia in hopes of discouraging further conflict.
