Democracy Now!

For this weeks assignment we had to choose two top stories on Democracy Now that relate to social movements and the media. An interesting story for this week was 'Rep. Ryan: Lunch Programs Yield "Full Stomach, Empty Soul". This Thursday in Washington there was an annual Conservative Political Action Conference that brought all types of activist, pundits and politicians for one of the largest right-wing events of the year. To start off the conference Rep. Paul Ryan opening speech suggested children who receive school lunch are sometimes not cared for by their families. He suggested how even when children come to school just to receive their free school lunches they don't want the school food anymore, they want to have brown paper bags just like the rest of the other kids because they know someone who cared for him made it for them. It was interesting to see how kids are changing there perspectives of school lunches, if a child was really hungry they would come everyday to receive the free school lunches but kids get embarrassed about it. Many kids come from low-income families and it's not in the family's budget to give all their children lunches. I don't agree that all families don't care for their children its just not in their budget majority of the time. Another story in which I found interesting was "Duke Energy Ordered to Stop Pollution at North Carolina Plants" the energy giant Duke energy spilled over 35 million gallons of coal ash into the Dan River, one of the worst spills in U.S history. On Thursday, a state judge reversed the North Carolina Environment Management Commission ordered to stop groundwater pollution at its 14 coal-fired plants. Coalitions of environmental groups have challenged the case saying what they called lackluster state oversight. I believe they should have been harsh punishments for the energy company, they have destroyed a beautiful river because of lack of cleaning up the chemicals they proper way. The decision to not expose of the chemicals the proper way has now destroyed a beautiful piece of our environment and I agree with environmental groups that there needs to be harsher consequences for this company.
