S.A.F.E.'s petition:
Our group S.A.F.E, students against fuel extraction, created a petition and gathered signatures in protest of Fresno State investing in fossil fuel stocks. Our group wanted to raise awareness through our peers, students, coworkers, etc. over the past couple of months on the issue. We created a petition online at Change.org and mailed the physical petition to the president of student affairs. Our hopes in creating this petition was to prompt change through raising awareness of our current insufficient practices. Our group is not expecting immediate action, but hopes that these types of efforts will bring about change and shift focus towards renewable energy sources and stocks rather than fossil fuels.
Our group is dedicated to raising awareness about issues pertaining to the environment, with focus on fossil fuel extraction. We hope that if we get enough students involved in our movement, we can bring about change in the bigger picture. This type of divestment has already occurred on other campuses, and our group hopes that through these types of efforts, our university can soon follow suit. If nothing else, our first petition will began to raise awareness about the issue, and our group is more than excited waited a reply. As students, we have little financial support but with continuous efforts and numbers, we can cause a social movement to happen. What our S.A.F.E. group is focused on throughout this semester and what we plan to continue to do is raise awareness about alternative fuel options, and choices. This isn't limited to the issue of fossil fuel extraction, although it's our obvious purpose, but also to urge students to take action through simply following the 3 r's: reduce, reduce, recycle. Our group believes by providing an attainable goal, more students will be inclined to join our social movement which could lead to a greater change.
