Democracy Now!

For this weeks assignment we had to look up two articles in which we had to read under Democracy Now. The two articles that were the most interesting were the first called "U.S names 55 Schools Under Investigation for Handling of Sexual Assault". What was interesting about this article was that it covered issues of sexual assault on college campuses and how even Ivy League colleges are coming public with this issue as well. In the article it describes how the Obama administration has released a list of about 55 colleges and universities are under investigation for possibly violation the Title IX federal law is handling the sexual assault cases and complaints. This list has never been public and it includes top private schools like University of Chicago and Swarthmore and also includes public universities like Florida State and Penn State that were also on that list. Schools that surprised the public to come forth on sexual assault complaints included Ivy League schools like Dartmouth, Harvard, and Princeton. Students from Tufts University rallied to protest Tufts' decision to back out of a government agreement to improve policies after the government step in and told the school they violated the Title IX policy. What sparked the issue so fast were sexual assault cases that occurred in Tuft University and Brown University, students reported rape at their schools.

Another article from Democracy Now that interested me was Seattle mayor unveils plan to phase in $15 minimum wage hike.  Mayor Ed Murray has set his phase for a $15 an hour minimum wage, which is more than twice the current federal minimum. Seattle businesses will have between three and seven years to implement this rise depending on the size of the business. Councilmember Kshama Sawant opposes of this $15 an hour minimum wage and criticized that it shouldn't take big businesses a four year phase when keeping their workers is causing people one day longer in poverty. This does sound like a very good plan for the community of Seattle because people should not be living on a minimum wage that can't even help support a family or even worse single parents who have to support their children with no other income. Those creating this plan should definitely go after the big businesses because those are were majority of people work for and it should not take a big businesses more than four to ten years to impose an increase of $15 an hour minimum wage.
