Syria in Retrospect

The Syrian government has been in the news recently due to the negotiations with the U.S concerning chemical weapons removal. According to democracy now anchor Amy Goodman, the Syrian government has been accused of stalling the deal brokered between the two powers which prevented a U.S strike earlier in the year. The deal was to ensure further peace talks and promote a sense of reassurance to both parties concerned in the form of weapons removal; however the progress of these negotiations has come to a stall. The removal date approaching and peace talks in Geneva not going well are the main reasons pressure is being applied to the government of Syria to keep their promises. According to the report less than five percent of the chemicals have been moved to the port showing Syria's contempt to follow through with their promise. With the pressure on Syria comes a new finding by the human rights association that the government has razed neighborhoods in an attempt to punish civilians in Hama and Damascus. According to a spokesperson for human rights watch the Syrian government razed seven locations. This unlawful attempt at punishment is documented by witnesses and satellite cameras which according the spokesperson verify their findings. Thousands of families lost their homes in the demolitions.

An attack on a government building in Iraq  made by suicide bombers and gunman left twenty four people dead before the security could resolve the matter.  Snapshots and video of blood stained walls and explosion aftermath illuminate the scene. The attack has a direct correlation to the fighting between the Iraqi army and rebels in Armbar province.  No doubt this attack was in response to a fight. A death toll of nine hundred is estimated to have occurred in Iraq just this month.
