MOVIE EVENT6

On May 1st A Helping Hand for the Hungry showed a movie or documentary about hunger, called "A Place At The Table". A week before the movie our team put together a flyer advertising the movie and they were posted for people to attend. Unfortunately we didn't have as much people show up for the movie but one or two, however it was a really good informative documentary. The movie talked about a lot of great things however it never really stated clearly how to solve the problem about hunger. The movie showed a couple of different families and the struggle that they go through because of low income and because they can't afford food to put in their mouths. The interviews with the different families showed and taught  the viewer from a different perspective, because they can actually see the families struggling, and what they go through, and it was one of my favorite things of the movie. The viewer was able to put themselves in their shoes, and see the reality of things. I myself learned a lot from this movie, but one thing that really got me was how Barbie, one of the participants in the movie, was talking about how shes not able to receive food stamps because she was making a dollar more than the food stamps require. So even though  she had a job and she made money it was not enough to feed her two kinds, therefore she was back in the same position she was at when she didn't have a job. Sometimes the problem with hunger is the transportation, for example in low income areas where people live there is only mini stores that don't sale any healthy foods, only junk food or fast food. The large supermarkets were at a longer distance making this a huge struggle because if there is no money for food then there's no money for transportation, for them its one thing or the other, not both.

CHALKING EVENT

A Helping Hand for the Hungry chalked twice facts and adverted our movie event throughout the semester. Its was something very new to me and I really enjoyed doing. The first time we chalked was before March 4ths  march.  We did the chalking as a group which made it more fun and a great experience for us. We chalked all over in the free speech area and in front of the library facts like "Fresno ranked as the 5th…" or " 1 in 3 children will go to bed hungry". While doing the chalking it was cool seeing the people reading what we were chalking, some cared to ask what we were doing and it made the group feel important. Others just walked over while we were chalking but it just shows that they don't care. The second time we chalked we were advertising our movie event and actually convince people to come, however the day of the event not a lot of people showed up. That day we chalked in front of the social science building, the free speech area and in the library again. We tried to do the chalking in the areas that most people pass through therefore we did it in those areas. The whole point of the chalking was just a different way to inform people without taking their time, its easy to just read it on your own then having someone tell you. I love doing the chalking because it was fun for the group and we really enjoyed ourselves and we would definitely do it over again, but this time in different areas on campus.

TABLE EVENT

On March 4th A Helping Hand for the Hungry, before the march, set up a table along with the other groups in front of the speech area. Days before, the group made a poster board with a couple of information about what the group was about. We also had to come up with a mission statement to read during the event. The cool thing about this, and why its one of my favorite events its because we were all there as a group and it felt like we were important people. We also made fliers to give out that day to the people who walked by. When we were all set up with the table we got to work, the time of the day was perfect because a lot of students were out of class and we were able to inform a few about our cause. It was nice seeing people asking us what we were about because we know it made them curious and wanted to know. World hunger is one of the things that most people care about, and would do something about it. During the table stand each group walked to the speech are and said our mission statement for everyone to hear. We had some entertainment and refreshments that everyone enjoyed. Also after we made everyone was already excited for the march and making more posters got us ready more, into that pumped up feeling. At the table we had a lot of information about what our cause was about and some of the people, if they were in a hurry preferred taking a paper then listening to us talk to them. Others liked the one-on-one interaction and it made us feel like we were getting these people connected to us.

MARCH EVENT

On March 4rth A Helping Hand for the Hungry marched around campus with other groups with different causes. We marched around campus after the event held in the speech area were we set up a table. Days before the group made marching signs to hold while marching. On the signs we wrote all kinds of stuff about are group, statistics about hunger and of what we wanted as a group. We wrote things like "STOP WORLD HUNGER" and " The main cause for hunger is poverty".  The entire group marched however; things and the experienced would have been a lot better if the team was together during the march. Since there was a great amount of people everyone was just kind of everywhere some in the middle and some in the front and others at the end.  Besides that we didn't walk together meeting other people was also a great experience, because you introduce your cause to other members of other groups and they introduce theirs to you.  During the march we had people from the street yell things at us, and others hooked, I'm not sure if that was against the march or supporting the cause but the point is that we grabbed the peoples attention. Some were actually reading the signs we were all carrying with us, and that's another point we want the people to know what we want and of the real issues out there. This kind of  movement was also new to me and a good experience but I didn't like the fact that people told us things, people are mean and I don't like that, therefore I wouldn't do it again.

PUSH-POLLING EVENT

One of the events that honestly I was scared of was doing the push-polling over the
phone, that I actually ended up liking and enjoying alot. Before everything,  A Helping Hand for the Hungry had to come up with a survey for the caller. It was basically just a series of questions that helped the group know how much people  knew and if they didn't to inform them about the issue of hunger in their local area. Each member sign up for two hours to do the calling individually, I did the two hours on Wednesday April 2nd & 3rd from 11-noon. The first day no caller answered the phone, the second day 5 people answered but  only 2 young ladies  agreed to take the survey. When we took a look at the results and we analyzed them, we saw that most of the people who did the surveys were female of hispanic descent, and that mostly all of the people did not know or recognize any of the facts that were asked to them. One of the questions asked was  "Are you currently receiving or have you ever received government aid such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)?" and most of them answered  no. With that we came to a hypnotizes/ conclusion of why most of the people did  not know about the hunger issue. That hypnotizes/ conclusion was that most hispanics are not that inform of their community or environment around them, because they isolate themselves, therefore they may not know about programs or don't qualify for programs like (SNAP). Although that may not be the case it was an observation that our group came up with when analyzing the results of the survey.
