Among all of the articles on Democracy Now from the passed week, the article, "Egyptian Activist Alaa Abd El- Fattah on Prison and Regime's War on a Whole Generation," brought an awareness to an issue that I was oblivious to the poor conditions of the country.  A man named Alaa El- Fattah, was interviewed and gave an extremely startling insight on how the country of Egypt has treated those who protest against the country. Fattah stated that he had been arrested many times for speaking out but his most recent arrest had shown the true injustice of the Egyptian criminal justice system. He stated that the police broke through his door beating him and his wife then arresting him. Without stating the reason for being attained, he was held in a cell for 12 hours without food and did not receive treatment for the wounds from the beating at his home. Alaa made it clear that Egyptian Judicial system is ran by the police rather than being independent from the persuasion of the police. Although Alaa has been arrested several times and physically harmed, he stated that he will continue to fight against the social injustice in his country. I found this article to be truly moving in that the freedoms many Americans take for granted, are the same freedoms people from other countries are willing to die for.
The other article I found to embody a powerful message was the article, " The Bounty Police Force Albuquerque Officers Face Protests, Probe over Spate of Fatal Shootings." Within this article it gives insight on the police department of Albuquerque who has been under scrutiny for 37 fatal shooting since 2010. The citizens of Albuquerque had seen enough police brutality and decided to take to the streets to voice their opposition to the police department. What caused this overwhelming emotion of anger from the citizens of Albuquerque was the death of a man who was shot for camping in a restricted area. To add to the anger of the people was the fact that the whole incident was caught on film leaving the police department to defend the police officers actions. Due to the horrific video, the activist group Anonymous, shut down the police departments website and asked the people of the city to protest against the social injustice of the growing police state. Many of the people who protested were family members and friends of those who had been wrongly killed by the police department. This article is a prime example of how many people in America today are fed up with the abuse of power many police departments have shown in recent years. Like the protesters in the article, it is up to the people to take a stand and unite to fight against the growing police state in America.
