March Forth On March Fourth
This past Tuesday our class held an event called March Forth On March Fourth. This event was held in the free speech area; it included free food, a dance performance, a singing performance by the Raging Grannies, and a march. Each group had their own table with an information board and fliers. The previous day, we made several protest signs in class. I made one, writing “Hungry For Justice” on one side and “No Child Should Go To Bed Hungry” on the other side. Our group also made fliers to pass out to people during the event. The flier, which was made with Microsoft Word, included: our mission statement, some statistics about hunger in Fresno, and information about where you could volunteer. I did a bit of research on my group’s topic so that I would be able to talk to other students about it. We started the event at noon. That morning I printed  out some additional information to paste onto our board. I talked to a few people about our mission statement and explained the fliers to them. During the point where we were supposed to read our mission statement in front of everyone, I did get a bit nervous, but my group was very supportive. After the performances and mission statement readings, we all gathered to get ready for our march. I had never participated in a march before, so I was very excited. I was surprised by how many people were able to march with us. We marched around campus, though there were few  students walking around campus during that time. If I were to do the event again, I would try to find more pictures to paste on my board; it was mostly filled with stats and information. I would also want to do the march at a time where there are more students out of class. I think that overall, the event did raise some awareness of each group’s issue. The free speech area is a very populated walkway, and I did see that we caught the attention of most students who were walking by.
