Protest March Summary
As part of the March Forth event on March 4th, the Students Against Fossil Fuel Extraction organization participated in the march for justice. Our focuses included promoting greener lifestyles and a greener campus. Our campus invests in oil stocks, we would like to put an emphasis on this point and try to convince students to oppose the idea. Investments in solar and wind energy stocks are a better option. CSUSF have already boycotted oil investments.
Three members of our group participated in the event. We made plenty of meaningful signs for the march. I was pleased with the amount of people who were supportive of our stance on the issue. Many people volunteered to march for our cause. We grabbed the attention of plenty of students and faculty. Cars were honking and pedestrians were cheering as we walked by. The march lasted about 45 minutes as we covered a large portion of the campus. Other marching groups received a lot of attention too; they did a fantastic job of utilizing the resources they had available.
I believe in the power of numbers. Today, the main reason to why the whole march was successful was the number of participants. When all groups get together and put out an event, chances are it would be successful. Having the leadership of our professor made it possible for the large number of groups to come together. What we did before the march contributed significantly. Food, drinks, and the raging grannies’ singing were the greatest factors that gravitated people to our tables before the march.
After the march, I heard a faculty member saying the writing on some of the signs was hard to read from indoors. This is an area were all groups need to focus on next time. Thicker markers and fewer words per sign could be the easy fix.
